Digital Realty achieves five nines of uptime for the 11th year in a row

Digital Realty has achieved five nines of uptime for the 11th consecutive year, surpassing 99.999% availability throughout 2017.

The company says that its ability to maintain consistent uptime is down to its choice of strategic locations, robust data centre designs and outstanding staff in addition to its rigorous processes and procedures.

"Delivering 'five nines' of uptime for the 11th straight year demonstrates our commitment to resiliency and to serving as a true business partner to all our customers, from enterprises to telecommunications customers and leading cloud service providers," said William Stein, Digital Realty's chief executive officer. "We are especially proud of this milestone given our rapid growth and we remain focused on ensuring that all of our facilities around the world meet the same stringent standards for design, construction and operations."

Digital Realty’s data centres maintained consistent uptime even when storms Harvey and Sandy took down a number of data centres and its surrounding areas without power. Capacity followed the effects of the storms that crossed the Atlantic in 2017 and reported on its impact on the telco world.

"We are very pleased with our design, construction and operations teams, who have worked tirelessly to ensure that our customers maintain uptime, even in the face of extreme weather events such as the recent storms on the East Coast of the US, in Ireland, and elsewhere around the world," added Danny Lane, senior vice president of data centre operations.

To date Digital Realty surpassed 1.7 billion operating minutes across its 205 data centres, across 33 metropolitan areas globally. Over the past 11 years, the number of data centre suites operated by Digital Realty has grown from 74 suites at the start of 2007 to more than 750 by the end of 2017.

"Our unwavering commitment to resiliency is the bedrock for all Digital Realty's offerings, from interconnected scale, with options ranging from a single rack up to multiple megawatts, to the ability to connect directly, privately and securely to any combination of public, private and hybrid cloud offerings," commented Erich Sanchack, Digital Realty's executive vice president of operations.

The uptime metrics are calculated based on the evaluation of all Digital Realty data centre suites using standard industry methodology, and the total number of operational minutes were prorated for each year and each data centre suite, starting from 2007 through to 2017.
