CenturyLink goes live with new fibre optic route connecting Colombia and Ecuador

CenturyLink has recently activated its fibre optic route linking Colombia in the city of Cali and Quito in Ecuador.

This expansion of infrastructure and network coverage will give CenturyLink’s enterprise customers access to dedicated internet services, the portfolio of CenturyLink’s global products as well as providing diversified fibre routes for service contingencies.

Commenting on the route going live, Hector Alonso, regional Latin America president at CenturyLink, said: "As technology needs increase for companies in Latin America, CenturyLink is committed to preparing our network for the future in order to meet the current and future demands of our customers. As a company, we understand how important it is for businesses to have a secure and reliable network that delivers faster connections to help move their businesses forward. Our expanded network offers companies in the region local network infrastructure and support together with global connectivity, creating a gateway for the exchange of information in the region and around the world."

The 585 kilometre route enables the of transport and IP services in intermediate cities of Colombia (Popayan, Ipiales, Pasto) and Ecuador (Tulcan, Ibarra). The total network has a installed capacity of 400Gbps in the transmission layer and is connected to the ring of alliance in Colombia and the submarine system SAC (South American Crossing), enabling an international on-net outlet for Ecuador.

Earlier this year CenturyLink was named top in the Vertical Systems Group’s latest leaderboard of US Ethernet market-leaders. CenturyLink's advance was driven by its $34 billion November merger with Level 3, along with continued growth in Ethernet ports for both companies. Previously, Level 3 ranked second to AT&T and CenturyLink ranked fifth on the mid-2017 US Ethernet leaderboard.
