BT hires new head of planning and transformation from Boston Consulting

BT has appointed a chief strategy and transformation officer as part of a series of changes in top management by CEO Gavin Patterson.

The new executive, who starts at the beginning of May, is Michael Sherman, who has worked for the last 11 years at management consulting and business strategy firm Boston Consulting Group (BCG) in Dallas.

“He will be a fantastic addition who will help us to take our strategy, strategic planning and transformation plans to the next level,” said Patterson.

Sherman studied electrical engineering and computer science at Duke University in North Carolina and then graduated from Duke’s Fuqua School of Business with an MBA in 2006. By then he’d already spent eight years as an executive vice president at supply chain specialist Viewlocity Technologies, also based in Dallas.

According to his LinkedIn entry, Sherman consulted at BCG in three sectors – telecommunications media technology, digital and IT, and private equity consulting. He says there that he worked with clients in wireline and wireless, digital media, and business-to-business and business-to-consumer sales and service, with broad experience on establishing new product and solution offerings, maintaining and re-invigorating legacy business models and expansion models.

Sherman said of his new appointment: “BT is in a great position. It’s a world class provider of digital services to multinationals and the UK’s leading provider of broadband and mobile. I’m excited to be able to help drive forward the strategy that Gavin and his team are building and bring further insight and focus.”

BT pointed out that Patterson had made a number of appointments “as he builds a team to drive the business forward”.

These include former UK water regulator Cathryn Ross, who joined as director of regulatory affairs in January, and Sabine Chalmers, a former Anheuser-Busch InBev executive, who joins as general counsel next month.

In addition Bas Burger became the CEO of BT Global Services from June 2017 and in September Marc Allera, the CEO of EE, the mobile operator BT acquired in 2016, was appointed to lead a newly created consumer business, including EE.
