Nokia recently announced that it will be able to push subsea
fibre speeds up to 600Gbps with the release of a new optical
chipset – the Photonic Service Engine 3 (PSE-3).
According to the company it is the first chipset to use
probabilistic constellation shaping (PCS), a technique
developed by Nokia Bell Labs that pushes fibre-optic
performance close to the Shannon limit. It enables maximum
capacity over any distance - from metro to subsea - increasing
capacity up to 65% over currently deployed networks while
reducing power by 60%.
