Etisalat partners Idemia on consumer SIM provisioning solution

Etisalat and Idemia have partnered together to provide SIM provisioning that allows consumers to store multiple user profiles on a single device and switch between them remotely.

The new solution uses the Embedded SIM (eSIM) global specification by the GSMA which allows provisioning for any mobile device.

Commenting on the collaboration, Esmaeel Alhammadi, senior vice president of network development, Etisalat said: “Etisalat is continuously striving to keep in line with the technology evolution and the changing dynamic requirements that will help engage and improve customer experience.”

The growing popularity of the eSIM is being driven by the increased usage of technologies like IoT and M2M on devices compared to the traditional SIM card. It is further predicted that the popularity of the eSIM will grow particularly for the automobile sector and its use of embedded technology and solutions.

“Today’s partnership is significant as there are billions of devices expected to be connected on IoT and M2M technologies and the need for compatible applications and devices have increased over a period of time. It is essential to work with solutions that will provide consumers this flexibility in the usage of our services,” added Alhammadi.

Idemia specialises in augmented reality acquired by Otono Networks and can offer now offer eSIM orchestration technology. Working together both companies can offer an eSIM lifecycle management solution to simplify the adoption of eSIM for both mobile operators (MNOs) and device manufacturers (OEMs).

Earlier this month Etisalat was named as one of five companies to join support the Carrier Blockchain Study Group (CBSG), the global blockchain consortium of telecom carriers. The group will explore how to collaborate on building next-gen cross-carrier blockchain platform and ecosystem.
