Rostelecom picks ZTE to upgrade its network

ZTE announces that it has won a 70% share of the first stage of the access network modernisation project with Russian operator Rostelecom.

Rostelecom is to build the first stage of the project using ZTE’s Multi-Service Access Network (MSAN) product which leverages VDSL. The second stage of the build will use high-speed technologies as G.vectoring and G.fast, which are currently being tested by Rostelecom.

The company says the need to upgrade its network has been driven by the growth of IP Internet services and the need for general high speed internet access. As a result, Rostelecom urgently needs an integrated access platform that can handle traditional services as well as provides high-speed broadband services. The new solution improves speeds of the existing copper network and supports high-bandwidth for the new services, including 4K/8K video and potentially AR/VR.

To help Rostelecom meet this objective ZTE will offer up its advanced optic/copper integrated product equipment, the C350M/C300M MSAN. According to ZTE, the solution lowers Rostelecom’s capital expenditure while meeting the need of increased network speeds. In addition, it also allows evolution towards the FTTx network, enabling Rostelecom to directly deploy the C350M/C300M MSAN product on its next-generation optical network.

ZTE also meets the strict requirement for equipment performance, particularly in the harsh weather that Russia is known to experience. This includes equipping its products with lithium batteries that have long performance times in low-temperature environments. In addition, ZTE provide customised outdoor cabinets that are cold-resistant, water-proof, moisture-resistant and dust-proof to guarantee internet reliability and stability.

Specifically, the C350M/C300M MSAN product also adopts a variety of energy-saving innovations, including smart electricity-supply technology and higher-density ASIC chips, which ZTE says reduces the power consumption per port by more than 30% from the industry average, and significantly decreasing the operating expenditure for Rostelecom.

This is one of a number of contracts ZTE has won of late. In November, ZTE won a 47% share of the bid for China Unicom’s IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem) network project. The IMS project will see China Unicom offer a range of new and applications such as VoLTE and RCS (Rich Communication Suite), one number with multiple devices, VoWiFi and 5G voice services etc.
