Eir’s wholesale boss to be group CEO after Xavier Niel takeover

Carolan Lennon, the managing director of Eir’s wholesale operations in Ireland, is to become CEO of the group.

Lennon, who has headed the wholesale operation since 2014, will take over the top job as soon as NJJ Telecom Europe completes its purchase of the group.

NJJ, which already owns Salt, the Swiss mobile operator, and Monaco Telecom, is the investment vehicle of Xavier Niel, who owns French operator Iliad.

Lennon will take over from Richard Moat, the former Orange, T-Mobile and EE executive who became CFO of Eircom – as it was then – in 2012 and CEO in 2014. Moat announced his intention to step down with the NJJ takeover.

She said today: “One objective for Eir [is] to provide the best mobile and broadband network to every household and business across Ireland through multi-year investments.”

Lennon joined Eircom in 2010 and, as managing director of its networks and wholesale division, has had responsibility for managing the installation and control of networks and broadband infrastructure across Ireland.

She manages the largest team of employees in the group and is leading the rollout to connect 300,000 homes in rural Ireland with fibre broadband. She has held this position since October 2016.

Before 2010 Lennon worked for Vodafone for five years, as marketing director and then consumer director. She has a degree in information technology from University College Dublin and an MBA from Trinity College Dublin.

At the same time a new chairman is coming into Eir. David McRedmond is the CEO of An Post, the Irish post office, and he will continue in that role – which he has held since October 2016. He worked for Eircom for seven years as managing director enterprises and group commercial director until 2006.
