Telefónica has named Mario Martin as the new CEO of infrastructure division Telxius as part of a major management overhaul, replacing Alberto Manuel Horcajo Aguirre.
Martin was most recently Telefónica’s group director of the COO Office, but will now take charge of Telxius, which manages the Spanish operator’s array of subsea cable systems, including MAREA and BRUSA, and mobile towers.
Martin will be replaced in his previous role by Natalia Sainz, who is currently director of financial planning and coordination.
Martin replaces Horcajo Aguiree who will leave the organisation after 18 months in charge. Prior to this, he held various roles with Telefónica Brasil. See below for a video interview with Horcajo about Telxius.
His appointment was announced as part of an overhaul of Telefónica’s organisational structure that will see a new head appointed at its domestic unit and a split in its Latin American arm.
The move is one of the biggest management shake-ups since Jose Maria Alvarez-Pallete took charge of the company in 2016. It sees Emilio Gayo – previously head of Telefónica’s Spanish arm’s marketing and commercial department – become executive chairman of Telefónica España.
The overhaul also sees María Jesús Almazor, up until now director of Southern Spain, take up the newly created role in the chief operating officer of Telefónica España.
Telefónica will also separate its Latin American unit into two. The first will see Argentina, Chile, Peru and Uruguay falling under a new “Hispam Sur” (South) division, which will be led by Bernardo Quinn – until now director of human resources.
Colombia, Mexico, Central America, Ecuador and Venezuela will form a “Hispam Norte” (north) unit, which will be led by Alfonso Gómez Palacio, the current CEO of Telefónica Colombia. He will be replaced as Colombia’s chief by director of public affairs and regulation for that country, Fabián Hernández.
Álvarez-Pallete said: “The digital world requires permanent renewal and this informs the proposed new structure. The generational change in Telefónica’s organizational structure will help simplify the company and make it more agile, with definitive focus on management, customer service, growth, efficiency and profitability.”
