Djibouti Telecom and TESubCom DARE contract comes into force

Djibouti Telecom and its partners have agreed a supplier contract with TE SubCom for the Djibouti Africa Regional Express (DARE) subsea cable system.

DARE will link Djibouti with Mobasa, Kenya, with branches to three major coastal cities in Somalia - Mogadishu, Berbera, and Bosaso.

The 5,400km cable will offer 100G low-latency services to East Africa and the Horn of Africa with high-capacity transmission delivering up to 30Tbps of capacity. It is configured as a two fibre pairt trunk, with each trunk fibre pair offering cross-sectional capacity of 150 channels at 100Gbps.

“With high-capacity and low-latency, the DARE system will offer an alternative route to East Africa and the Horn of Africa, easing congestion across existing systems, promoting competition and supplying much needed capacity to a rapidly expanding region,” said M Mohamed Assoweh Bouh, Djibouti Telecom general manager.

“We are confident in TE SubCom’s superior technology and operational expertise and look forward to launching the implementation phases of the project.”

DARE will include diversified points of presence (PoP) with option for future connectivity via TE SubCom’s reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexing product line (ROADM), with an additional optional branch available to Dar E Salaam in Tanzania.

It mark the latest in a number of contracts for TE SubCom. The subsea company is involved with the Monet cable linking Latin America to Africa; Hawaiki, which links Australia to the US via Hawaii; and a new Pacific cable involving Facebook and Amazon, among others.

“Our selection as supplier demonstrates our commitment to the regional short-haul marketplace and we are very pleased to partner on the DARE project to deliver this system that will stimulate growth in the region by providing robust, reliable and low-latency connectivity,” said Sanjay Chowbey, President, TE SubCom. “TE SubCom is proud that DARE has entrusted our team with the responsibility to make their project a reality.”

The regional submarine cable system is expected to be completed by May 2018.
