JPIX deploys Coriant solution to Tokyo and Osaka metro areas

Japan Internet Exchange Co (JPIX) has deployed Coriant’s Groove G30 Network Disaggregation Platform to its Tokyo and Osaka metropolitan areas.

The roll-out of this new technology will enable JPIX to scale network capacity and support the delivery of high-performance services including 10G, 40G and 100G, in the most cost-efficient way. In addition, the Tokyo and Osaka network deployments include programmable 200G coherent optical transmission between multiple data centre sites.

Commenting on the news, Petri Markkanen, managing director of Coriant, Asia Pacific, said: “JPIX is playing a vital role as the core of Japan’s Internet with an advanced network infrastructure optimized for the stringent demands of an evolving application landscape that includes IoT and 5G. We are pleased to be working closely with this industry-leading Asian IX provider and are committed to helping JPIX further enhance connectivity services and network efficiencies for their end-user customers.”

The new solution will be delivered to JPIX through Coriant’s local strategic partner Uniadex, a local IT service provider, and will help JPIX meet growing demands for internet exchange traffic from both domestic regional and international customers.

JPIX is currently one of Japan’s largest IX service providers serving over 160 customers across its network. Its customers include: Tier 1 service providers, ISPs, content providers, Content Delivery Networks (CDNs), cloud providers, cable operators and digital media companies. JPIX says it selected the Coriant solution based on its low power consumption, high-density systems architecture, client-side interface diversity and its pay-as-you-grow scalability.

Technically speaking Coriant Groove G30 is a 1RU modular open transport solution for cloud, data center, and IXP networks that can be equipped as a muxponder terminal solution and as an Open Line System (OLS) optical layer solution.

In July of this year, JPIX extended its peering fabric IX service to the Equinix International Business Exchange (IBX) data centre in Osaka, OS1. The move has enabled JPIX to improved network efficiency to address demand for data centre and IX from international and domestic network operators in the OS1 IBX data centre. Additionally, Equinix customers can interconnect and peer directly with JPIX's diverse aggregation of internet service providers (ISPs), cable TV service providers and content providers.
