Three UK axes roaming charges in 11 additional destinations

CK Hutchison-owned mobile operator Three UK has scrapped roaming charges in 11 new locations outside the EU, taking the total number of free roaming destinations it offers to 71.

Threebegan abolishing roaming charges in 2013 as part of its Feel At Home roaming offer, meaning its UK customers can access calls, texts and data abroad for no extra charge.

In its latest addition to the roaming package, Three has ditched additional charges for customers visiting Chile, Colombia and Costa Rica, plus El Salvador, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Panama, Peru, Uruguay, Vietnam and Mayotte.

Other locations already offered include the US, Australia and Hong Kong, as well as EU member states, where operators were forced to remove roaming charges by EU law in June.

Three claims that 4.6 million Brits have used Feel At Home so far this year, with an average data usage of 750mb per trip. It claims to now cover 82% of its customers’ overseas trips.

Dave Dyson, chief executive at Three, said: “My ambition is to free our customers and offer 100% roaming worldwide at no extra cost and we will continue to abolish unfair roaming charges until we achieve this.

“We’re passionate about improving our customers’ experience when travelling abroad, so they can stay connected and use their phones just as they do at home. To reassure our customers, we have also committed to maintain the availability of roaming in the EU at no additional cost following Brexit.”
