Metronode opens Tier III facility amid $150m expansion

Australian data centre operator, Metronode, has completed its second facility in Unanderra, New South Wales (NSW).

High demand both from the NSW Government and the private sector has seen the company undertake a $150 million construction programme in 2017, with new data halls being built in Wollongong and Sydney as well as an 8MW expansion in Melbourne for a major international customer.

Metronode built its first data centre in Wollongong five years ago, with the NSW Government a key client as it implemented its GovDC programme, consolidating 160 data centres into two Metronode facilities at Unanderra and Silverwater Sydney.

Metronode CEO David Yuile said his company was the fastest to build from start to finish of any other provider in Australia, a major advantage over competitors as it allowed clients to have certainty about scaling up according to demand. This latest facility was built in just six months.

“Again, at our Unanderra site, we have shown we can build our world-class facilities quicker than anyone else,” said David Yuille, CEO of Metronode, who also spoke to Capacity TV at ITW 2017 about data centre capacity and supporting the rise of hyperscalers.

Yuille added: “Wollongong companies looking for local data storage now have the very best facilities close at hand. Every industry sector is undergoing digital transformation at a rapid pace and facilities such as Metronode’s Unanderra data centres are the factories of the future.” Unanderra is approximately 10km south-west of the Wollongong central business district.

The new data centre, which has received Uptime Institute Tier III certification for Design and Constructed Facility, will provide colocation services for Illawarra enterprise and commercial customers as well as GovDC.

NABERS, the Government environmental ratings agency, is set to assess the new facility for a NABERS 4.5 data centre rating. Metronode says it is the only operator in Australia which has four of its facilities with a NABERS 4.5 data centre rating – one of which is the existing Unanderra facility.

“Metronode has been trusted by the NSW Government to build and operate data centres since 2012. We look forward to welcoming local Illawarra businesses into our new Unanderra hall,” said Yuille.
