Edgemesh announces CDN milestone

Edgemesh, the web acceleration company, has announced a global milestone for its pioneering content delivery network (CDN).

Edgemesh says that it now operates on more than 3,500 global networks, surpassing Akamai’s 1,650+ networks by more than half.

In an exclusive interview with Capacity, Jacob Loveless, CEO of Edgemesh, explained: “The reason why is because every time somebody browses an Edgemesh-enabled site, they are creating a point of presence (PoP) inside of that network. So if you have a website that has 20 million new users a month that means you have 20 million points of presence.”

The Edgemesh ecosystem has been designed to replace traditional legacy CDN’s by cutting load page times by roughly 60%, decreasing bandwidth fees by 90% and enabling business to distribute their content globally without the need for changes to its infrastructure. It also enables companies to analyse real user experiences by storing every user interaction so businesses can pinpoint performance issues.

The technology operates as a peer-to-peer content delivery network that collates the content directly on the edge devices, enabling true last mile delivery. The network scales through the business’s users allowing the content to reach more regions in a timely manner by removing the need for congested legacy backbones. By removing centralised networks which ‘bottleneck’ the delivery of content, Edgemesh can replicate user local caches between browsers anywhere in the world. Providing customers with diverse network path that enable the ability to increase capacity in line with demand.

“Singapore is number one in the world for internet, but they have one of the most unstable networks in the world of latency," added Loveless. “The reason why is not because of the bandwidth pure number of connections. If a billion people are going to one PoP, or one server, or one backbone or even a hundred servers, all of those devices are trying to pull data down from that one source. There are of course fundamental limitations of that. You can throw as much bandwidth as you want at it, you’re not going to solve that problem.”

Edgemesh has also ensured that customer usability is a feature of its offering. In order to run the product customers only need to install a simple piece of Javascript that adds “mesh” capability to their existing Web page and access to the improve performance and deep customer insights as mentioned.

Brian Lillie, chief customer officer & EVP of technology services at Equinix, commented: "At Equinix, we have a bird’s eye view of new and exciting network and performance companies which is where we met the team at Edgemesh. We were able to add Edgemesh to our IOA Knowledge Base site in under an hour, and by the end of that same day we saw a 2x improvement in page load time and a more than 30% reduction in server bandwidth. Once in a while we see something that we believe can cause a paradigm shift in an industry, and we believe we're seeing one right now with Edgemesh and other innovative, edge computing solutions."

The Edgemesh solution is fully compatible with all modern browser security and privacy requirements. It also means that client-side acceleration is achievable without the need for any user add-ins or prompts.

Loveless says that he progressively sees major players in the wholesale telecoms industry slowly trying to make their way into the CDN market but not having as much success as they should saying: “The way you succeed as a CDN is having as many points of presence as possible, so that you can lower the distance between the content and the user and the reality is the economics don’t work for them. For them to deploy CDN PoPs in 100 racks of servers they have to physically change the infrastructure,” a problem which Edgemesh’s solution provides.

As the company achieves this great milestone in such a short space of time, Loveless makes it clear that he has time to celebrate. When asked on what biggest challenge is, he said focus.
