Cobalt names Mahoney as CTO of its Riviera Maya broadband project

Cobalt Holdings, a provider of managed broadband services, has announced the appointment of Michael Mahoney as its new CTO.

Cobalt Holdings, through its Mexico operating subsidiary, Cobalt Broadband Services, provides fibre-optic network, wireless and commercial-grade Wifi services to the hospitality industry and mobile network operators in Mexico’s Riviera Maya.

Speaking on his new role Mahoney said: “I am very excited to help build Cobalt’s Carrier Ethernet network in a region that has limited broadband connectivity. In particular, we are providing ‘guaranteed bandwidth’ to the area’s more than 500 hotels and resorts with more than 200,000 rooms, as well as offering fronthaul and backhaul connectivity to mobile network operators. We are the only provider that will design, build, maintain and, most importantly, finance a state-of-the-art high-speed Internet access service for hotels and resorts – in exchange for a small per-room per-day charge.”

Mahoney enters the role with experience in the cross-border networks, telecommunications and IT, having previously held the position of EVP of operations and technology, president, and CEO at international carrier Viatel. For them, he supervised the design and construction of its 8,700km Circe fibre-optic network, which was delivered on time and on budget at $1.6 billion.

In addition, while at Viatel Mahoney was responsible for the company’s transformation from a $73 million revenue telecom reseller to a $750 million revenue trans-Atlantic pan-European facility-based carrier. During this time, Viatel also expanded its service offerings to include high speed Internet access, managed bandwidth, off-site data storage hosting, VPNs and secure point-to-point Ethernet networks.

Commenting on the new appointment Larry Malone, president of Cobalt said: “I have worked with Mike at Viatel. He has deep technical acumen, with broad expertise in operations, finance and business development, He has proven ability to quickly analyse key business drivers and develop strategies to grow revenue and margins. Our objective is to bring world-class managed broadband services to the Riviera Maya region, including completing a dedicated fibre-optic network, with international connectivity to the rest of the world.”

In May 2016, Colbalt acquired physical and IP assets of World Wi-Fi Network, one of the largest niche Wifi hotspot operators in the Caribbean thereby expanding the company's network reach and digital assets.
