Dialog Axiata completes first ever 5G trials in South Asia

Dialog Axiata, Sri Lanka's largest telecommunications operator, has become the first in the region to demonstrate 5G technology.

 




Trials were carried out at the Dialog Iconic store in Colombo, Sri Lanka, along with partners Ericsson and Huawei,

During the demonstration, the company was able to establish throughput in excess of 35Tbps on the 5G radio interface. In addition, the company showed a number of 5G technology solutions including, massive MIMO, cloud radio and applications such as IoT based smart parking, real time 4K video streaming, Industry automation and augmented reality plus demonstrations on digital business solutions.

“As Sri Lanka’s leading telecommunications provider, we are excited to conduct the first demonstration of mobile 5G Technology in Sri Lanka. Dialog is committed towards delivering the very latest in technology and connectivity to Sri Lankans and this 5G trial is a yet another milestone in our journey towards offering gigabit speeds with near-zero latency that will deliver next generation Broadband and enable industrial applications such as autonomous manufacturing and robotics,” said Supun Weerasinghe, group chief executive of Dialog Axiata.

In 2013, the company paid $25.2 million to secure spectrum for its 4G networkwhich is reported to be another first in Sri Lanka, and in June of this year commercially rolled out its 4.5G technology, featuring download speeds in excess of 1Gbps.

In attendance at the demonstration was Austin Fernando the secretary to the president and chairman of telecommunications regulatory commission of Sri Lanka; Dumindra Ratnayaka the chairman of the board of investment of Sri Lanka and Kingsly Fernando, the acting director general of telecommunications regulatory commission of Sri Lanka.
