Ooredoo Myanmar CEO quits after two years

Rene Meza has resigned as CEO of Ooredoo Myanmar after just two years in the post and is leaving telecoms. Ooredoo has appointed COO Vikram Sinha as acting CEO until it finds a permanent replacement.

Meza joined Ooredoo to run its Myanmar operation in August 2015, when he replaced Ross Cormack, who won the race to start services after the government licensed Ooredoo and Telenor in 2014.

Meza has not yet replied to emailed questions from Capacity about his reasons for leaving Ooredoo and about his next role. However, in a posting this morning on LinkedIn Meza said that he is leaving the corporate world. “This marks the culmination of an amazing journey in telecommunications that I started when I was 18 years old, which saw me becoming the CEO of the second largest mobile operator in Tanzania, Africa, at the age of 28,” he wrote.

He added: “As I retire from the corporate world I must give my big thanks to my mentors Ricardo Maiztegui and Won-Suck Song who did not only give me the courage and the opportunity to grow but who also always believed that I could do it.” Song, a former Millicom executive who chairs a number of boards, posted in reply: “Your journey is remarkable and your focus on people development ahead of anything else has proven to deliver sustainable results.”

Sinha joined Ooredoo in 2014 as CEO of its Maldives operation, after nine years with Bharti Airtel in India and Seychelles. He moved to Yangon to be COO of Ooredoo Myanmar in May this year.

Meza began his career in the industry at Millicom’s Tigo in Paraguay and has also run its operations in Pakistan and Tanzania. He has also run Zain Kenya, Airtel Kenya and Vodacom Tanzania.
