MPT Myanmar launches LTE-Advanced at 150Mbps

Myanmar’s state-owned operator MPT has launched LTE-Advanced mobile services in three cities.

The company, which works with Japan’s KDDI and Sumitomo, says it can deliver 150Mbps to customers using the advanced version of 4G technology.

Toshitake Amamiya, CEO of the joint venture, said: “The highly-advanced technology that powers MPT’s LTE+ network is the best in Myanmar. It offers customers lighting fast mobile data speeds unlike what was possible before, at the same charges as all our pay-as-you-go rates and data packs.”

MPT competes directly with subsidiaries of Ooredoo and Telenor, which were awarded licences and began operations in 2014 after the reintroduction of democracy.

MPT’s LTE-Advanced network covers 47 districts in the cities of Yangon, Mandalay and Naypyitawin. By August it will have reached over 20 cities, says the company, and plans 30 cities by September.

According to local reports, MPT claims 23 million users, with Telenor having 18 million and Ooredoo 9 million. The population of Myanmar – formerly Burma – is 51 million.

Amamiya said: “It truly is a huge leap forward for Myanmar’s mobile telecommunications that will impact the way people here experience rich online content and services on their mobile communications.”
