Liquid Telecom hires ex Vodafone exec Whitehill to run Neotel

Liquid Telecom has appointed former Vodafone executive Kyle Whitehill to run its South African network, Neotel, which it bought for $429 million in 2016.

Whitehill will be CEO of Neotel, formerly owned by Tata Communications, and will oversee plans to make extensive upgrades and expansions to the network, enabling more customers to access high-speed, reliable connectivity across South Africa, said Liquid.

“As part of theLiquid Telecom Group, Neotel will for the first time become a truly pan-African player with access to an extensive network footprint across the continent, giving us a stronger competitive edge in South Africa and beyond,” said Whitehill.

Neotel officially became part of the Liquid Telecom group, which is owned by Zimbabwe’s Econet Wireless, in February 2017 after last year’s takeover.

Whitehill spent 15 years of his career in the Vodafone group, including three years as CEO of Vodafone Ghana and then three as CEO of Vodafone Qatar, a company he left a year ago. Since then he has been in Doha, setting up the international arm of Ezdan Holding Group; Qatar’s largest real estate firm.

“This is an exciting time to be joining Neotel, as we look to reaffirm the company’s position in the market through improved services and products for our customers,” said Whitehill.

Last month Neotel appointed former Vodacom executive Michael Allschwang as chief sales and marketing officer.
