TRA signs MoU with du and Etisalat

The Telecoms Regulatory Authority (TRA) has signed a memorandum of understanding with operators du and Etisalat aimed at development of ICT services in the United Arab Emirates.

The UAE regulator struck agreements with the two operators in an attempt to facilitate raising the countries ranking into the top 10 countries on the National Readiness Index (NRI) in the World Technology Report.

According to the 2016 World Economic Forum report, the UAE is ranked 23rd, a leader in the Arab world, but some way short of the top 10. The UAE government has set the goal of breaking into the top 10 within the next five years.

The NRA said the two telcos could play a key role in helping to drive the UAE’s strategy, having signed the agreement in a meeting between a number of executives, including H.E. Hamad Obaid Al Mansoori, TRA Director General.

He said: ““Etisalat and du are the leading providers of telecommunications services and an important part of the country's ICT provisioning system. The partnerships with the TRA are part of the strategic direction that we are seeking to establish, which contributes to the support of the road map we have set in order to reach the top 10 in the NRI.

"Our country is following the path of the global developments in the ICT world by preparing plans, equipping teams and coordinating with all federal and governmental entities as well as the private sector institutions. In order to achieve global leadership and optimal use of technology, and the realization of the leadership vision in achieving the national agenda indicators of the “UAE vision 2021" in creating a sustainable environment and an integrated infrastructure.”

The MoU will see the two companies work with TRA across several sub-indicators, including fixed broadband internet services and increasing the internet bandwidth for each user.
