The 250km cable will connect Cox’s Bazar, a fishing port in Bangladesh, with Myanmar’s coastal city of Sittwe, according to a report in the Daily Star of Bangladesh.
BSCCL managing director Monwar Hossain told the Star that the 100Gbps cable will help the state-owned firm export bandwidth to neighbouring countries like Indonesia and Cambodia. It will cost $25 million to build, and take six months to lay, he added.
“We can initially export around 100 gigabits per second (Gbps) of bandwidth through the link. We have been trying to enter the market in Myanmar for the last couple of years.”
The cable will be operated by a new company - called BSCCL-Blueberry Bangladesh Limited – once Blueberry Telecom’s MD Cassidy NG signs the deal, which is schedule for 7 May, the report claims.
It is the latest subsea cable development for BSCCL in the region. The Bangladeshi firm already offers connectivity on SEA-ME-We-4 and SEA-ME-WE-5, which was completed in January.
