Telia Carrier launches PoP in Berlin

Telia Carrier has added a new point of presence (PoP) to its IP backbone network, providing high-speed, low latency connectivity services in Berlin, Germany.

The news, which comes after Telia Carrier announced that it has expanded the reach of its global backbone in the US by adding a new 100G New York City to Chicago fibre route, builds upon Telia Carrier’s recently added, low latency, DWDM route, the Frankfurt - Warsaw Express, to meet increased demand in in the German capital.

“Prior to this new PoP, connectivity from Berlin to other business centres in the region consisted of longer routes with higher latency. This PoP is a microcosm of the technological growth that has put Berlin on the map as a city where high speed, high quality IP services are readily available for carriers, content providers, cloud providers and mobile operators,” said Christoph Lannert, regional sales director for Telia Carrier.

“The Frankfurt-Warsaw Express is a vital artery of connectivity throughout the region, and Telia Carrier is in prime position to connect customers with low latency services via our global fibre backbone.”

The new data centre, Carrier-Colo, is owned by I/P/B/, one of the most connected facilities in the region providing connectivity and other IP services to international, national and regional start-ups, carriers, cloud and content providers.

Telia Carrier has been working with IPB, a local internet service provider (ISP) in Berlin, to help service a variety of start-ups, as well as established and international businesses needing a foothold in Berlin. The carrier says the IPB facility features “the highest number of networks and fibre connectivity in the region”. The global wholesale carrier has already brought several customers online, and is optimistic it can add more by leveraging its relationship with IPB.

Steffen David, managing director for IPB, added: “We are very pleased to have Telia Carrier, one of the world’s leading network providers, and their services featured in our facility in Berlin. For our customers, this means that they can receive worldwide connectivity with nearly unlimited bandwidth and a highly reliable network backbone that has extremely low latency.”

Telia Carrier’s CEO Staffan Göjeryd, recently told Capacity that the global wholesale carrier is looking at expansions in "more Tier II or Tier III markets" to better serve their customers.
