Equinix opens five new data centres and announces Verizon partnership

Equinix has announced five new data centres and an expansion of existing facilities in a $1bn expansion programme.

Equinix has announced five new International Business Exchange data centres and 14 expansions of existing facilities as a part of a $1bn expansion program. Equinix also announced that Verizon has agreed to resell Equinix colocation and interconnection services.

Equinix has invested more than $17 billion (including the planned acquisition of a portfolio of data centres from Verizon) to extend its global footprint.

The REIT (Real Estate Investment Trust) has been expanding rapidly during the course of the past year particularly and has opened new data centres in Dallas, Sydney and Tokyo, and integrated the acquisitions of Bit-isle in Japan and the UK’s Telecity Group.

During the course of the next year Equinix will open five new IBX data centres, adding an additional one million gross square feet of data centre space. The new sites will be directly connected to other Equinix IBX metro data centres.

Equinix’s recurring revenue is from customers in multiple metros, many of whom are looking to reach people, clouds and data at the edge of the network by using Equinix IBX data centers.

Equinix currently operates 150 IBX data centers in 21 countries and 41 metros across 14 million gross square feet of data centre space.

Equinix has also announced that Verizon has agreed to resell Equinix colocation and interconnection services. The reseller agreement enables Verizon to pair colocation and interconnection services in Equinix IBX data centres around the globe with Verizon's security, network and advanced communications services to enable enterprises to build hybrid cloud solutions and gain quick access to a multi-cloud environment.

Through this agreement, and building on a long-standing relationship, Equinix will provide Verizon with colocation and interconnection services. Verizon has also agreed to sell some data centre sites to Equinix.

"This agreement provides customers with fully-integrated network, security and data centre services designed to support their IT transformation," said Jim Duncan, vice president of global advanced solutions for Verizon Enterprise Solutions.

Verizon will sell Equinix colocation and interconnection services as part of larger, integrated customer engagements with an emphasis on pairing colocation services with Verizon security, network and advanced communications services.
