Embratel Star One launches new satellite for Latam market

Embratel Star One has launched a new $400 million satellite that will offer capacity in Brazil, as well as north, south and central America.

It is the ninth satellite to be launched by the America Movil-owned satellite provider. And the largest Embratel Star One has ever built. It is equipped with C, Ku and Ka Bands to allow new Internet services and low-cost Broadband.

Embratel said the launch complements the structure already comprised by five satellites in geostationary orbit (Star One C1, C2, C3, C4 and C12) and three in inclined orbit (Brasilsat B2, B3 and B4).

“With this launch, we have strengthened our position as one of the largest satellite companies in the world and reaffirmed our commitment to ensuring the growth and quality of the Embratel Star One fleet,” says José Formoso, CEO of Embratel.

The new satellite was constructed by the Canadian-American company SSL - Space Systems Loral and was launched into orbit by a rocket from France's Arianespace. It has 28 transponders (signal receivers and transmitters) in C Band to ensure the availability of voice, TV, radio and data.

It will also be used to offer improved cellular backhaul infrastructure for the Latin American market, integrating the América Móvil Group's backbone with its peripheral networks.

"We are very happy with today's announcement, which reinforces our market leadership in Brazil. We will expand the group's data transmissions, have a new cellular backhaul structure and accelerate the spread of Broadband in Brazil," celebrates José Felix, president of América Móvil in Brazil.
