UAE and Malaysian regulators in talks to co-ordinate satellite frequencies

The UAE Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) is in discussions to co-ordinate efforts in satellite frequencies, relevant future initiatives and other common interests with representatives of Malaysia's telecommunications sector authorities.

“It was the fifth in a series of meetings held upon a request from the Malaysian authorities, due to the need to co-ordinate frequency requirements for satellite communications between the UAE and Malaysia,” UAE’s TRA said. “Steps will be taken to strengthen co-ordination between the two countries and potential ways to reduce overlap between their satellite networks.”

The discussions were focused on the best ways of supporting a number of space-based services, such as broadcast satellite services, BSS, fixed satellite service, and mobile satellite service, as well as exploring feasible solutions to prevent interference between the satellite networks of both countries.

Hamad Obaid Al Mansouri, TRA director-general, said: “This meeting comes within the framework of the distinct relation between the UAE and Malaysia in general, and the co-ordination in the ICT sector in particular.” It also serves the interests of all parties involved, particularly the satellite operators in the UAE, namely Thuraya Telecommunications and Al Yah Satellite Communications.

Khalid Al Awadhi, manager of TRA's broadcasting and space services, added the meeting provided an important opportunity to exchange views on the latest developments in frequency spectrum and satellite communications affairs.

"We have agreed upon a plan that will be implemented during the next phase in order to serve the objectives of both parties. We have also discussed the activities included in the International Telecommunication Union's agenda, the proposed working papers on frequency spectrum affairs and the latest decisions issued in this regard," Al Awadhi said.
