TIM to deploy Nokia's 4.5G solution in Brazil

Nokia and TIM have expanded their partnership in Brazil with an agreement to upgrade the operator’s mobile network to 4.5G Pro.

The three-year turnkey agreement will see TIM use the 700MHz spectrum band and Nokia’s AirScale radio technology to future proof its network for 5G and the internet of things (IoT).

TIM was the first operator to use the 2600MHz band to support 4G LTE, and it has also refarmed 1800MHz spectrum for 4G services in Brazil. The extension of its partnership with Nokia will see it able to better mix frequencies on the same cell site, allowing TIM to achieve 4.5G speeds.

Leonardo Capdeville, head of technology at TIM, said: "We're looking at the highest technology quality standard today in the market, with the combination of three spectrum bands to increase our capacity and improve the end-user experience.

“With the support of Nokia and its AirScale radio access, we will be able to reach more areas and speed up LTE coverage in the country, reinforcing our innovation capabilities and commitment to the Brazilian market."

It is the latest deployment between TIM and the Finnish vendor. In 2015, Nokia helped expand TIM’s 3G and 4G networks in 17 Brazilian states using its small cells portfolio,

TIM Brazil’s deployment is the latest for Nokia, following a similar announcement from Ooredoo Qatar earlier this month. Ooredoo has deployed Nokia’s 4.5G Pro solution to upgrade its network in Doha.

Luiz Tonisi, head of the TIM Brazil customer team at Nokia, said: "Our commitment with TIM is to deliver a best-in-class service experience for its subscribers. This project is an important milestone for us as it paves the way towards the network of the future and reinforces our long-standing partnership with TIM.

“The near future looks very promising with the possibility to expand further our LTE footprint and make a positive impact in the digital society."
