Ooredoo launches 10Gbps FTTH service

Ooredoo has today launched its 10Gbps fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) service in Qatar and is targeting a wider commercial rollout later this year.

oredoo successfully trialled 10Gbps speeds in December 2016 and select VIP customers in Doha, Qatar, have been using the super-fast fibre network since 25 February. The next-generation speeds were demonstrated at Mobile World Congress this week and the service has now been expanded as part of a nationwide rollout.

“We’re delighted to be officially launching our 10Gpbs fibre service for Qatar at Mobile World Congress. This week is all about demonstrating Ooredoo’s data experience leadership, and we continue to set new milestones by expanding and enhancing the Ooredoo Supernet for mobile and fibre customers,” said Waleed Al Sayed, Chief Executive Officer of Ooredoo Qatar.

Ooredoo Fibre 10Gbps customers are experiencing the current fastest fibre speeds in Qatar, ten times greater than the norm. These customers will be able to download an HD movie faster than ever, and enjoy a seamless experience for services such as virtual reality and Ultra High Definition TV (UHDTV).

The upgrade to 10Gbps, alongside other significant enhancements to network infrastructure, will support Ooredoo’s broader strategy to introduce 5G services, offer 8K TV technology for entertainment fans, and position Qatar as “the best-connected country in the world”.

In December, Ooredoo successfully conducted tests on one of the first 5G trial systems in Qatar and the first in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region. In January this year, Ooredoo Qatar hit download speeds of 40Gbps as part of a fibre trial with Nokia carried out in Doha.
