Sparkle boosts SEA-ME-WE 5 launch with faster connectivity

Sparkle, the international services arm of TIM Group, has announced advanced connectivity solutions on SEA-ME-WE 5.

These new enhanced capabilities are available between Palermo, Marseille, Djibouti and Singapore.Palermo, Sicily Hub is one of the three direct landing options into open hubs, together with Marseille and Singapore. SEA-ME-WE 5 technology will provide up to 20% latency reduction than any other cable in service today.

SEA-ME-WE 5 is in fact the first cable in the Europe-to-Asia route to provide advanced connectivity solutions on a POP-to-POP basis from open hubs in Europe - such as Sparkle Sicily Hub in Palermo- as well as in Marseille and Singapore, in a decisive effort to effectively address today’s demand for flexible IP and capacity services, while facilitating network interconnection and improving performance with up to 20% latency reduction thanks to the cable straightforward routing architecture.

Sparkle’s connectivity solutions on SEA-ME-WE 5 out of Palermo will be available through Sparkle’s advanced data centre and open ecosystem Sicily Hub, a service marketplace where customers can also peer directly with major content providers or publicly through DE-CIX and interconnect with all cables landing in Sicily.

In addition, Sparkle provides backhauling to SEA-ME-WE 5 PoPs in Palermo, Marseille and Singapore as well as its top class global IP Transit service Seabone out of the three PoPs.

Solutions are based throughout the cable on a native 100 Gbps technology optimized for future upgrades to 200/400 Gbps. With a design capacity set at 24 Terabit per second on 3 fibre pairs deployed by a consortium of 19 carriers including Sparkle, the new cable system came into service last December 13th and provides lowest latency connectivity through 16 countries - Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Myanmar, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Oman, UAE, Yemen, Djibouti, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Turkey, France and Italy - offering an additional network layer of diversity and resilience for the heavily loaded Asia to Europe route.

Sparkle had already been awarded both Network Administrator (NA) and Network Operation Center (NOC) responsibilities for SEA-ME-WE 5 last year as a recognition of Sparkle’s affirmed competence and know-how in managing and operating submarine cable systems.

Both activities are performed in Sparkle’s Core Landing Station in Catania, which is also a main landing point in Europe for SEA-ME-WE 5 - as well as for other major international cable systems.
