Telstra guarantees ‘Always On’ subsea connectivity for key Asia routes

Telstra is set to introduce a new ‘Always On’ redundancy guarantee for its Hong Kong to Singapore and Japan to Hong Kong subsea cable routes to provide “assured availability and help keep people and businesses connected”.

Subsea cable damage can take weeks or even months to fix but the ‘Always On’ service guarantee will reduce the impact of cable damage, say Telstra, by using its scale and subsea cable network in the region to guarantee connectivity even in the event of a cable cut from fishing activity or damage from natural disasters such as earthquakes and typhoons.

As we live in an ‘always on’ culture, says Ellie Sweeney, executive director of global sales at Telstra, in a blog post on Telstra Exchange, where we expect non-stop connectivity “anywhere at any time”, the demand for data and better connectivity is rising, particularly in Asia where “data consumption increased by 70% last year alone”.

Central to this, Sweeney adds, is a vast network of subsea cables which carry more than 99% of international data traffic and keep us all connected to the internet.

“It means customers can be assured that all of their subscribed bandwidth – whether it’s 10Gb or 1Tb – can be supported on the same route in the event of a single or multiple outages on the primary path,” adds Sweeney.

“The scale and diversity of our subsea cable network in Asia puts us in a unique position to reroute traffic to another path with minimal downtime – within a matter of hours initially and with automation we expect to bring this down to a few minutes in the future. This is because we have one primary path and two protection paths over different cable systems along the busy Hong Kong, Singapore and Japan triangle.”

The service guarantee will mean Telstra customers with high-capacity needs can deal with one service provider and save money paying for spare capacity when spreading the risk of connectivity failure over more paths.

Telstra’s ‘Always On’ service guarantee will be available in the coming months.
