HKT announces new Hong Kong subsea cable

HKT will build a high capacity fibre cable system between Chai Wan on the island of Hong Kong and the KO Landing on the mainland, according to plans announced today.

The Ultra Express Link will be a 3km subsea cable system set to go live in 2017, connecting the SSW landing in Chai Wan with the Tseung Kwan O Industrial Estate (TKOIE) in the Sai Kung district of the mainland.

HKT said it was developing the new route to provide diversity and lower latency connections between the two parts of Hong Kong. Its aim is to develop TKOIE into a key data centre hub for Asia.

Mr. Alex Arena, Group Managing Director of HKT, said, "The building of Ultra Express Link demonstrates once again not only our leading position in solid fibre infrastructure in Hong Kong, but also our dedication to build Hong Kong into a regional data centre hub.

The new cable, together with the existing extensive fibre infrastructure provided by HKT, will allow us to meet the rising demand for high speed and high capacity connectivity requirement from data centre operators.

“HKT is the only operator to provide full diversity with different options of cable route across Hong Kong. We have full fibre coverage in all data centres in Hong Kong, particularly with diversity paths in all data centres in TKOIE.”
