Lycamobile launches 4G in Australia with new Telstra Wholesale deal

Lycamobile has today launched 4G data services across its Australian network after expanding its partnership with Telstra Wholesale.

The new deal will see the mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) expand its mobile offering to provide a 4G coverage footprint of 95% of the Australian population and a combined 4G and 3G coverage footprint of 98.8%, covering a total of 1.59 million sq km.

As Lycamobile continues to expand into a number of new territories worldwide – it currently operates in 21 countries with over 15 million customers - the rollout of 4G in Australia “underlines the company’s commitment to sustained investment in its existing markets and customers,” the company said in a statement.

Lycamobile launched in the country in November 2010 when it originally supplied access to Telstra’s 2G network. As part of the new agreement, 2G will become unavailable by the end of this year.

“Through our extended relationship with Telstra Wholesale, we are delighted to be able to offer 4G services to our Australian customers,” said Subaskaran Allirajah, Lyca Group chairman.

“As Lycamobile continues to expand globally, we are working hard to develop our product offering and maintain our commitment to customer experience as we further our goal of connecting communities and bringing people together across the world.”

Glenn Osborne, executive director of sales at Telstra Wholesale, added: “Telstra has a longstanding partnership with Lycamobile, and we are pleased to support them in expanding their offering to include 4G services alongside the existing high quality 3G product.”
