ETECSA and Telcel Mexico expand roaming agreement

The Empresa de Telecomunicaciones de Cuba SA (ETECSA) and Telcel Mexico have signed an annex which will see the operator expand its voice, texts and data services.

Building on an international roaming agreement signed in June 2002, the operator can expand the service and network coverage currently offered through its affiliated companies in other countries.

“Negotiations have now been completed and an annex to the agreement [June 2002] on international roaming between the two companies for roaming voice, text and data to customers of Operator Claro in Puerto Rico (branch Telcel Mexico), who travel to Cuba,” said an ETECSA statement.

The new annexed negotiations will enable Claro Puerto Rico mobile customers traveling to Cuba to use their mobile phones on the ETECSA network. Once an implementation period expires and technical tests for both operators will be performed.

The news comes after last month’s announcement that AT&T had struck a direct interconnection and roaming agreement with ETECSA for voice, texts and data. In March, Verizon signed a direct interconnection deal pertaining to wireline voice services between the US and Cuba.
