Cologix invests $130m and boosts footprint by 300%

Cologix has announced that it has started building a $130 million Columbus data centre, which will expand its data centre and interconnection footprint three-fold.

The new 160K SQF, 18+MW data centre is being established on Cologix’s current 8-acre campus in Columbus and will be directly linked to the firm’s existing Ohio data centres. This will offer connectivity to over 45 network service providers, over 20 cloud service providers and the Ohio-IX internet exchange.

"Cologix's position as the leading data centre and interconnection provider in Columbus has provided a unique perspective on key trends in the market,” said Grant van Rooyen, CEO of Cologix.

“Large enterprises are increasingly interested in outsourcing internal data centres with an eye toward leveraging cloud services for some aspects of their IT systems. Until now, there has not been a neutral facility in Columbus that can combine connectivity with the scale that can support large cloud and enterprise deployments, and we are excited to address that need with our new data centre."

The network neutral interconnection and data centre firm says it will meet the increasing demand from cloud providers and large enterprises, which are becoming regional cloud hubs. The new data centre will help to support cloud and computing capacity.

The news comes after Cologix completed the expansion of its VAN2 data centre in Vancouver last month, offering up to 750kW of new high density capacity.

Cologix says it has designed the latest site with the most sophisticated cloud providers and enterprises in mind. “The data centre will be built based on a concurrently maintainable design with 2N power and N+1 cooling.  Further unique attributes include an EF-4 tornado rating, K-rated perimeter fence and 24x7 guards,” a Cologix statement said.

Once complete, the firm claims the facility will be the “largest and most advanced colocation data centres in Columbus.

Cologix says it has received all the necessary permits and completed all necessary site preparation work. The first phase of construction is expected to be operational in mid-2017.
