Ethernet switch market worth $6bn in second quarter

The layer 2+3 Ethernet switch market was worth $6 billion in the second quarter of 2016, with Cisco responsible for 55% of the revenue, according to the Dell’Oro Group.

The company’s survey says that the market grew 6% year on year. HP Enterprise came second to Cisco, with a 9% share, followed by Huawei with 7%.

Sales for Arista and Dell reached an all-time high, said the survey, “as the overall market experienced new records driven by a rebound in campus switching, a record quarter in China, and strong cloud growth”. Chinese vendor H3C also featured in the top five, with a 4% market share.

Alan Weckel, vice president at Dell’Oro, said: “Record sales into China and a record quarter for sales to the cloud helped drive growth. While China and the cloud remain seasonal in nature, both are continuing to grow as a percent of the market and drive many of the requirements for new products.”
