Megaport appoints Cooper to drive European evolution

Australian SDN network interconnection provider Megaport, which has acquired ECIX and OM-NIX as part of its European expansion, has appointed Mark Cooper to head up the organisation in Europe.

Cooper joined Megaport on August 8 as EVP of strategy and sales. He has a wealth of market and internet exchange (IX) experience and joins from Amsterdam Internet Exchange (AMS-IX). He joined AMS-IX in November 2013 and was chief commercial officer. Prior to that, he spearheaded strategy and marketing at Interxion.

“For me it’s an exciting challenge to be able to get in right at the start of Megaport’s expansion into the European market,” said Cooper. Megaport officially launched its elastic interconnection platform in Europe at the end of July and elastic fabric will be available in nine sites throughout London, Dublin, Stockholm, and Amsterdam, with an additional four sites also coming online.

“Now the real hard work starts in building upon the success in the other regions and making sure that when people think of cloud access the first word that comes to mind is Megaport. We are building a team here in Europe but also expanding the team globally.”

Denver Maddux, chief executive officer and executive director at Megaport, added: “The launch of our European expansion marks a major acceleration point in Megaport’s evolution. Between the incredible and wide-reaching footprint and the amazing people joining our team, Megaport is in an excellent position to deliver elastic bandwidth and critical internet exchange services throughout Europe.”

Megaport signed agreements worth a total of AUS $3.1 million to acquire Germany’s second largest IX operating Peering, which operates under the brand European Commercial Internet Exchange (ECIX), and Bulgaria’s carrier-grade pan-European network services provider OM-NIX.

“Our acquisition of ECIX brings 30 new locations across 8 metros to our footprint plus an awesome team of incredibly professional people,” added Maddux. “Our other acquisition OM-NIX built up a great network to facilitate data transfer between network operators and top notch peering. This acquisition has enabled the growth of our network exponentially within Europe.”

The Australian-listed company’s European footprint now spans 13 countries across 19 markets and 57 locations.
