Verizon and SK Telecom partner to strengthen 5G specifications

SK Telecom and Verizon have announced a partnership to co-develop technical specifications for 5G standards and conduct joint studies to identify 5G use cases and applications.

SK Telecom, Verizon, Korean telco KT and its Japanese counterpart NTT Docomo, recently formed the 5G Open Trial Specification Alliance, to standard testing for next-generation network technology.

Verizon and SK Telecom have also declared their intentions to join in the Open Computer Project (OCP), which focuses on redesigning hardware to simplify computing infrastructure.

The two companies signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) signing ceremony at SK Telecom’s headquarters in Seoul, Korea.

Under the MOU, SK Telecom and Verizon will turn 5G technical specifications into global standards. The two companies will also conduct joint studies to identify innovative 5G use cases and applications.

Following the MOU signing, the two companies agreed to strengthen their cooperation in the Open Compute Project (OCP) and the Mobile Central Office Rearchitected as a Datacenter (M-CORD) project.

The Open Compute Project is a collaborative community focused on redesigning hardware technology to support the growing demands on computing infrastructure.

M-CORD is attempting to bring economies of scale and cloud agility to the central office, or data centre, by integrating SDN, NFV, and cloud principles with the best of mobile architecture.

“This MOU will further strengthen and deepen our collaboration with Verizon,” said Alex Jinsung Choi, chief technology officer and head of the corporate research and development center of S K Telecom said: “Through joint studies and research, SK Telecom and Verizon will develop 5G technical specifications and innovative use cases to speed up the commercialisation of 5G and usher in the new era of 5G.”
