Small Cell Forum appoints AT&T executive as chair

The Small Cell Forum has appointed an AT&T specialist in metro radio networks at its new chair, replacing Vodafone executive Alan Law, whose term of office has expired.

At the same time the forum, which is led by carriers, has announce new work programmes focusing on the digitised enterprise and what it calls “hyperdense” networks.

The new chair is David Orloff, who is AT&T’s director of radio access network product introduction, based in Seattle. He was the company’s head of small cell platforms until March 2015 and he has been a board member of the Small Cell Forum for three years.

“I am honoured to take this role at an extremely exciting time for small cells, which are now poised to be the foundation of the dense hetnet [heterogeneous networks] and of 5G architectures,” said Orloff. The forum “is focused on delivering the enabling technologies and architecture to ensure the automation, service delivery and interoperability required to make 5G a success”.

Forum CEO Sue Monahan said: “Small cells have made enormous progress and are set to be the primary enabler of future networks for enterprise, dense urban and rural services.”

Each of the new work streams has several operator and vendor champions that will provide a leadership role. AT&T, Reliance Jio and Airhop will focus on deploying hyperdense networks. Vodafone, Cisco, Huawei and Spidercloud will lead on digitalised enterprises.
