Airtel offers unlimited voice to postpay Indian customers

India operator Bharti Airtel is offering unlimited voice calls to postpaid customers in the latest move to prepare for competition from rival operator Reliance Jio Infocomm, expected to launch later in August.

Airtel is making the unlimited calls offer– along with bundles of 3G or 4G data – to customers on two monthly plans. Customers paying the equivalent of $18 a month will get unlimited local and national calling – including when they are roaming outside of Airtel’s network – plus one gigabyte of data and 100 daily SMSs. Customers paying $24 a month get five gigabytes of data as well as the unlimited calls and 100 text messages.

The operator is including free access to over-the-top provider Wynk’s music and movie services with both bundles.

The prices are high for India, which has among the cheapest mobile calls in the world, but Reliance Jio is expected to go for the top end of the market when it launches its 4G services this month.
