Verizon recruits former O2 UK chief Ronan Dunne to run wireless

Ronan Dunne, former CEO of Telefónica’s O2 UK, is to run Verizon Wireless from the beginning of September.

Dunne – who tried unsuccessfully to find a new independent future for O2 UK after Hutchison’s takeover was blocked in May – had already announced his plans to step down from the company. He ceased being CEO at the end of July and said he would stay on in an advisory role “into September”.

He will be executive vice president and group president of Verizon Wireless, reporting to John Stratton, executive vice president and president of operations.

“Ronan brings a wealth of expertise, as well as global wireless perspective and experience to Verizon Wireless,” Stratton said. “He has a proven record of performance in highly competitive environments. We look forward to his leadership as Verizon continues to invest in and evolve our wireless business to provide the best experience for our customers.”

Dunne will be responsible for all aspects of Verizon Wireless’s operations, including marketing operations, wireless operations, network operations, customer care and digital operations.

He was CEO of O2 UK for eight years and latterly on the board of the Telefónica group. Hutchison’s Three UK attempted to buy O2 but the deal was blocked by the European Commission in May.
