Vodafone Spain launches indirect fibre to 4.2m homes

Vodafone Spain is offering indirect fibre services to 4.2m residential properties in the country which are not yet covered by its own network.

Vodafone Spain  reached an indirect access deal with Telefonica in May 2016 to provide customers with the option of subscribing to its Vodafone One fibre-based broadband packages. It is now rolling out  

These packages have download speeds of 30 Mbps and upload speeds of 10 Mbps. However, a deal which has been done with Spain’s Comision Nacional de los Mercados y la Competencia (CNMC) on broadband speeds may change that for the better.

The CNMC confirmed that as a result of feedback from the EC and the Ministerio de Industria, Energia y Turismo (Minetur) on its initial draft plans from November 2015, the CNMC has opted to maintain differentiated obligations for copper and fibre-based networks belonging to Telefonica Espana (Movistar), with these obligations based on the level of competition in each geographical area. These new CNMC regulations require Telefonica to provide wholesale access to its fibre-optic network in all of Spain apart from 66 cities.

Vodafone’s FTTH and HFC Spanish network now covers approximately 15 million residential properties, including 4.2m via Telefonica, 2m via the networking sharing deal with Orange and 9m via its own network.
