Netflix demand means NZ operator activates 100G Ethernet link

New Zealand operator 2degrees has activated its 100Gbps Ethernet interconnect to the Southern Cross cable network Southern Cross Cable Network because of customers’ demand for Netflix movies.

The company says it is doubling international content providers – not just Netflix, but also Microsoft, Google and Apple.

“This is fantastic for 2degrees customers,” said chief fixed officer Mark Petrie. “The enabling of our 100GbE interconnect into Southern Cross allows us access to uncontested capacity giving us the ability to provide more data, faster.”

The interconnect means that 2degress is the first to connect to Southern Cross’s new carrier Ethernet platform. “We’ll continue to work closely with Southern Cross to innovate and take advantage of technology advances to enhance the value that 2degrees can bring to its mobile and broadband customers across New Zealand,” said Petrie.

Southern Cross marketing director Craige Sloots said: “With the growth of content and cloud demand it is not surprising that carrier Ethernet-based services such as Southern Cross’s new Gigapac service have become increasingly popular and dominate the requested capacity service types for many providers including Southern Cross.”

Full service operator 2degrees was founded in 2001, backed by Zimbabwe group Econet Wireless and a Maori trust, Hautaki. It has 97.5% population coverage and also owns the fourth largest internet service provider in New Zealand.
