3 Hong Kong refarms 900MHz and plans TDD-LTE launch

3 Hong Kong has refarmed the 900MHz spectrum at the end of June to enhance its indoor 4G LTE network coverage and also plans to launch TDD-LTE services this October.

The highly penetrative nature of the 900MHz spectrum enhances indoor 4G LTE reception. Meanwhile, carrier aggregation enhancement plans are on the drawing-board with a view to providing an even faster data service. Furthermore, 3 Hong Kong will launch a TDD-LTE service in October to support multi-mode mobile devices while serving 4G LTE customers with massive bandwidth, making for an even more stable and smoother mobile communications experience.

It has also announced that by the end of 2016 it expects to have 23,000 Wifi hotspots by the end of 2016.  “3 Hong Kong has been developing mobile and Wifi services by continuously increasing network coverage and capacity,” said HTHKH chief operating officer Jennifer Tan.

“Most WiFi hotspots are served by a 1G optical-fibre backhaul facility, and connectivity between all 3 Hong Kong cell sites and optical-fibre leased lines from HGC has been upgraded to 1Gbps to accommodate today’s 4G LTE network and future mobile telecoms development.”

3 Hong Kong also plans to construct small cells in H2 2016 to cope with rising levels of network traffic and further enhancement of the end-to-end hotspot user experience.
