DT appoints Bharti Airtel exec as European head

Deutsche Telekom has appointed Bharti Airtel executive Srini Gopalan as its European chief next year

The announcement follows a board shakeup last week indicating that an outsider will assume responsibilities in Europe from Claudia Nemat, its present board member for Europe and technology.

The group has also announced that it was splitting up its Europe and Technology unit to bring its network and IT team. Nemat will be heading the new operation as board member for technology and innovation.

"We're strengthening technology and IT with the new board department on the one hand, while on the other hand we're strengthening our expertise on marketing and sales with our new head of Europe, who has extensive experience with consumers," said Deutsche Telekom CEO Timotheus Höttges.

Gopalan, who is presently the consumer director of Bharti Airtel, will oversee the sales, service and marketing activities of Deutsche Telekom’s various European units from January next year.

He was also previously chief marketing officer at T-Mobile UK and is said to have been part of the management team responsible for negotiating the joint venture with Orange UK that later formed EE.
