SK Telecom, DT and Ericsson claim world’s first transcontinental 5G trial

SK Telecom, Deutsche Telekom and Ericsson have announced a partnership to deploy what they claim to be the world’s first transcontinental 5G trial network.

The companies have agreed to deploy trial networks in Korea and Germany based on various key 5G technologies, including network functions virtualisation (NFV), software-defined telecommunications infrastructure (SDTI), distributed cloud and network slicing.

"The aim of this world's first transcontinental trial is to provide optimised end-user experiences by providing consistent quality of services and roaming experiences for advanced 5G use cases with enhanced global reach," said SK Telecom.

The companies will also cooperate on use case deployment, ecosystem development, global marketing and standardisation.
