Google Fiber to acquire Webpass for expansion

Google Fiber has entered into an agreement to acquire internet service provider Webpass in a move to accelerate its plans to deliver high-speed broadband to major cities in the US.

The acquisition will enable the expansion of Google Fiber, the company’s fibre-to-the-premises service in the US, presently in six metro areas in the US.

"By joining forces, we can accelerate the deployment of superfast internet connections for customers across the US," said Charles Barr, president of Webpass. "Webpass will remain focused on rapid deployment of high-speed internet connections for residential and commercial buildings, primarily using point-to-point wireless."

San Francisco-based Webpass primarily uses point-to-point wireless – a technology that Google Fibre is seeking to expand on – to deliver high-speed broadband to apartment buildings and businesses. It is presently serving five major markets in the US, including the San Francisco Bay Area, San Diego, Miami, Chicago and Boston, offering a 100Mbps to 1Gbps service for $60 a month.

Google first announced plans to build a fibre network in 2010. Earlier this year, Google Fiber revealed its plans to deploy its 1Gbps broadband service in San Francisco, Chicago and San Diego.
