Wireless ‘cheaper than fibre to the home’ says Google boss

Fibre to the home is outdated and will be replaced by wireless connections, says Google’s Eric Schmidt. Wireless is already cheaper than “digging up your garden”.

Schmidt was speaking at the annual shareholders’ meeting of Alphabet, Google’s holding company.

He told shareholders that wireless technology has improved to such an extent that point-to-point connections can reliably deliver 1Gbps.

Google already has a subsidiary, Google Fiber, that is building fibre networks in five cities in the US. Google is also building fibre networks in east Africa.
