Nokia launches digital health unit

Nokia has launched a digital health unit following the completion of its acquisition of m-health device maker Withings.

Led by Cedric Hutchings, former CEO of Withings, the new unit combines employees from Withings and employees from the preventive health and patient care teams in Nokia Technologies. Its product line includes activity trackers, smart body analyser scales, thermometers, blood pressure monitors as well as home and baby monitors.

Headquartered in France, Withings has around 200 employees in Paris, Hong Kong and the US.

"This is the beginning of an exciting new chapter in the history of Nokia Technologies as we extend our product portfolio to include a series of powerful digital health technologies," said Ramzi Haidamus, president of Nokia Technologies.

"The Nokia brand is synonymous with innovation, connectivity and consumer technology and the acquisition of Withings puts us in a perfect position to capitalise on the huge opportunity in the health space. We're excited to welcome the Withings team to the Nokia family."

The completion of the €170 million deal is earlier than expected. Nokia announced plans to acquire Withings in April and said then that it expects to complete the acquisition in the third quarter of this year.
