Ooredoo first to launch 4G in Myanmar

Ooredoo Myanmar has launched 4G services in the country’s three major cities.

The operator has rolled out 4G in over 20 townships within Nay Pyi Taw, Yangon and Mandalay and plans to cover half of Yangon’s townships, nearly 90% of Nay Pyi Taw’s townships and all of Mandalay, according to the Myanmar Times

“This is the beginning of a journey,” said Ooredoo CEO Rene Maza. “We’re going to be expanding our network as we go along, and it will be driven fundamentally by spectrum.”

Maza said the telco will acquire more spectrum and base stations to enable its 4G expansion in the coming months. It also plans to upgrade a quarter of its 3,800 base stations to 4G.

In February Ooredoo secured $300 million in funding aimed at network expansion in Myanmar. Its rival telenor Myanmar is expected to soon follow suit with the launch of its 4G services following tests in Yangon, Mandalay, Myawaddy and Muse.

The country’s Ministry of Transport and Communications had planned to auction 2.6GHz spectrum in March but the process has been postponed due to delays in the finalisation of a spectrum roadmap.
