Telia Carrier, which owns and operates one of the world’s most extensive fibre backbones, has established its first significant presence in Montreal at connectivity provider Metro Optic’s interconnection hub.

Joining a network of over 30 domestic and international carriers at the fibre-densest site in Montreal, it will offer wholesale IP transit, Ethernet and IPX services for carriers, content and cloud providers.

Telia Carrier will enable Montreal customers to connect to its AS1299 fibre optic backbone and it is "dedicated to delivering a responsive, connected experience to address the continued demand in the Canadian market”, says Art Kazmierczak, director of business development, Americas at Telia Carrier.

"By moving to Montreal, in addition to already being in Toronto, Telia Carrier strengthens its presence in a high-growth IP transit market in Canada, and reinforces our commitment to meeting customer demand for consistent and reliable performance worldwide."

Michael Bucheit, CEO of Metro Optic, added: “We are proud to partner with Telia Carrier which re-inforces the strategic importance of Montreal as a critical telecom hub between North America and Europe.”

Metro Optic claims the data centre hub, at 875 St. Antoine, has the lowest latency (data speed) route to New York and inexpensive co-locating servers.

Montreal is positioned as a key aggregation point for international traffic from Europe and the US as key transatlantic cable landing points are situated in Atlantic Canada.
