Vodacom claims 1Gbps on LTE-U

Vodacom claims to have achieved mobile broadband speeds of over 1Gbps by aggregating spectrum in licensed and unlicensed bands.

The tests were performed using what the operator claims to be the latest small cell technology and as well as a combination of feature enhancements. The operator is said to have aggregated various spectrum bands, including one carrier of its licensed spectrum and two carriers from the unlicensed ISM spectrum.

The lack of spectrum has become one of the biggest hurdles in deploying high-speed broadband services to consumers, according to Andries Delport, Vodacom’s CTO.

“Breaking 1Gbps represents an important milestone for LTE network speeds in South Africa as it shows what can be achieved by combining adequate spectrum with the latest technology. Lack of spectrum has become one of the biggest hurdles in deploying high-speed broadband services to consumers,” said Delport.
