Jamaica approves new mobile operator licence

Jamaica’s finance minister Audley Shaw has confirmed that the country is to get another mobile service provider as the government’s cabinet has approved the granting of a new licence.

The operator, although not named at this stage, will offer “basic telephone and cellular services,” Shaw said yesterday appearing before a standing finance committee of parliament examining 2016/17 expenditure estimates.

Presently, there are two major telecommunications providers in the country and news of a new player surfaced in January when a former technology minister said the cabinet was considering an application for a new cellular licence.

Shaw had appeared before the committee on behalf of Andrew Wheatley, the country’s technology minister, who was abroad on government business.
